In meinem 15. Heutzutage, in Eurem 21. In my 15th century we made so-called "violvarw tüchlin" from the juice of the petals. Small linen cloths were soaked with the paint until all the paint was absorbed. When dried, the rolled up cloths could be stored and traded quite well, without needing to fear that the paint would spoil. My friends got curious of course and so we decided to make a little hiking tour through the surrounding fields and vineyards to collect red poppies so that we could produce this beautiful violet-red colour. In my 15th century, the instructions in the painter's books said "take as much as you want, you'll find more than enough of them". Well, that was in my time, ... some 600 years ago. Nowadays, in your 21st century, red poppy has become quite rare in many agricultural areas. When it does show up, it is often mown together with grass and other plants, so that all the modern machines can drive comfortably along the paths. So if you are lucky enough to find red poppies, consider that the flowers are needed as a source of food by bees and other insects. So don't pluck the whole plant in a rude lack of judgement! It would spoil the colour you want to prepare with it anyway. Red poppies don't live very long. What blooms today has already perished the next day. So look around for petals that have already fallen to the ground. If there aren't enough of them and you want to collect them directly from the flowers, then do it moderately. Keep in mind that bees and their kindred are attracted by the red colour. They need it for orientation. Take the trouble and pluck only one petal from these beautiful flowers! The bees and other animals will thank you for it. If you have collected enough leaves, I think two to three hand full are enough, you put them into a large glass jar and pour pure alcohol over them. Leave the glass to stand for a few days until the petals have turned pale and lost all their colour. Then add some alum. Then proceed as described in the recipe. Of course you can also squeeze and grate the petals as indicated. But this is a really tedious work. Let the alcohol do the work and extract the colour out of the leaves.

My apprentice master finished the picture exactly on 'World Book Day' and while he beheld the finished work he got the idea to offer it to bookshops as an advertisement poster on the next World Book Day.
Harry suggested that in this case the depiction should bear a title or show an apt quotation. The two tomcats and my master brooded for a while on that question, when Harry - all of a sudden - had a flash of genius and titled the picture RATHER BAREFOOT, THAN BOOKLESS. They gave Harry a pat on the back and praised him for his ingeniousness ... Then my master sat down and added instantly a scroll with Harry's quote to the illustration ... while my furry rapscallion was flaunting as proud as a peacock. Well, well, I thought, what would these guys do without me and my distinct dislike of shoes ...? Before I forget it ... Here you can see the new depiction and some details. I'll soon add a sample displaying the scroll ... If you want to enlarge the pictures a bit, click on them. A couple of days ago I travelled with my master and his wife to the region where he was raised. He had an itch to show us the landscape that inspired him to create the illustration in which I'm laying on a lush meadow, overlooking a wide river valley. Although nearly thirty years had passed since he had been there for the last time almost nothing had changed. The tree standing not far behind me in the illustration - a beautiful pear tree in reality - was still overlooking the edge of the slope. I found even the river valley looked quite like he remembered and painted it. However, the real river is not as wide as he depicted it. Here you can see how the place looks like in reality. He took some pictures with this magic little box of his, which he calls 'camera'. Later that day we collected some interesting looking lichen which we'll use for colour making. I remember a recipe from 'my' 15th century. However, it's not so terribly convincing. Did you ever experiment with lichen? Do you have any recipes how to make colour or dye with them? Let me know if you have. I'd be happy to exchange ideas and experiences.

I BID YOU WELCOME GOOD SIRS My name is Alisande
and I appreciate you've dropped by. I'm a limner and scrivener - or as you would put it in your 21st century - an illuminator and scribe. I was born in the year of the Lord 1394. Shortly after my 16th birthday, I suddenly found myself - heaven knows through which mysterious occurrences - in the 21st century. Since then I have been living with a couple who very lovingly and affectionately took me in. Since they are both painters and book illustrators, I can even help them with their work. Information about their art you can find on their websites: In the course of time me and my feline chaperone Harry became rather well known and started to receive a lot of messages from near and far.
It became clear: We needed our own space where we can correspond with all our devoted followers and friends. So Norman - one of my two artist friends - set up this 'Chronicle' for us. Here you can have a chat with me and my rascally mouser. Archives
