In meinem 15. Heutzutage, in Eurem 21. In my 15th century we made so-called "violvarw tüchlin" from the juice of the petals. Small linen cloths were soaked with the paint until all the paint was absorbed. When dried, the rolled up cloths could be stored and traded quite well, without needing to fear that the paint would spoil. My friends got curious of course and so we decided to make a little hiking tour through the surrounding fields and vineyards to collect red poppies so that we could produce this beautiful violet-red colour. In my 15th century, the instructions in the painter's books said "take as much as you want, you'll find more than enough of them". Well, that was in my time, ... some 600 years ago. Nowadays, in your 21st century, red poppy has become quite rare in many agricultural areas. When it does show up, it is often mown together with grass and other plants, so that all the modern machines can drive comfortably along the paths. So if you are lucky enough to find red poppies, consider that the flowers are needed as a source of food by bees and other insects. So don't pluck the whole plant in a rude lack of judgement! It would spoil the colour you want to prepare with it anyway. Red poppies don't live very long. What blooms today has already perished the next day. So look around for petals that have already fallen to the ground. If there aren't enough of them and you want to collect them directly from the flowers, then do it moderately. Keep in mind that bees and their kindred are attracted by the red colour. They need it for orientation. Take the trouble and pluck only one petal from these beautiful flowers! The bees and other animals will thank you for it. If you have collected enough leaves, I think two to three hand full are enough, you put them into a large glass jar and pour pure alcohol over them. Leave the glass to stand for a few days until the petals have turned pale and lost all their colour. Then add some alum. Then proceed as described in the recipe. Of course you can also squeeze and grate the petals as indicated. But this is a really tedious work. Let the alcohol do the work and extract the colour out of the leaves.

I BID YOU WELCOME GOOD SIRS My name is Alisande
and I appreciate you've dropped by. I'm a limner and scrivener - or as you would put it in your 21st century - an illuminator and scribe. I was born in the year of the Lord 1394. Shortly after my 16th birthday, I suddenly found myself - heaven knows through which mysterious occurrences - in the 21st century. Since then I have been living with a couple who very lovingly and affectionately took me in. Since they are both painters and book illustrators, I can even help them with their work. Information about their art you can find on their websites: In the course of time me and my feline chaperone Harry became rather well known and started to receive a lot of messages from near and far.
It became clear: We needed our own space where we can correspond with all our devoted followers and friends. So Norman - one of my two artist friends - set up this 'Chronicle' for us. Here you can have a chat with me and my rascally mouser. Archives
